Philosophies & Resources

I will update my Teaching, Mentor and Service statements as I continue to train and educate myself.

Teaching
I believe STEM education should promote curiosity, inspire critical thinking, and allow students to engage with their peers and community about current scientific topics. Through education, I aim to teach students specialized knowledge and technical expertise through transferable skills obtained by participation in lectures, lab and mentored research experiences. I focus on teaching students written and oral communication, time management and project management skills, critical thinking, and leadership skills. My goal is to have my students become well-rounded leaders with the needed skills to succeed in whatever their future holds.

Mentoring
I believe that mentorship is one of the most important aspects of being a leader in the classroom, laboratory, and community. Thus, I strive to be a mentor who believes in her students, sees their potential, and inspires them to be the best version of themselves.  I will help equip students with the intellectual and technical skills needed to form hypotheses to ask challenging questions, design experiments to answer those questions, and foster an environment for professional development.

My philosophy follows these principles: 1) embrace and develop student’s professional identity, 2) meet students where they are and identify their strengths, and 3) foster diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the lab, classroom and academic community.

Service
I believe as an educator, I am obligated to use my platform to ensure my students feel valued, heard and appreciated. I aim to use my participation in outreach and university committees to combat the systemic racism, sexism, ableism, transphobia, homophobia and classism seen in my communities and academia at large.

I also believe it is also my obligation to give back to the community of Baltimore. I have been a part of the Neuroscience Outreach and Volunteer Association (NOVA) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine for the past few years. We participate in brain awareness week each year, where we bring neuroscience to the middle school classrooms in the greater Baltimore area. We also aim to inspire college students from underrepresented backgrounds to get involved in research programs by providing lab tours and internships, and partnering with them to help answer questions about graduate school.
